The chrysanthemum ( Greek: chrysous golden, athemum flower ) is the primary November flower a member of the Aster family, originating in Asia, it was first grown in China, before being transported to Japan.
Representing longevity, joy and optimism, red chrysanths mean love and passion, white mean honesty, innocence and purity, yellow for sorrow and loss, purple for a get well wish.
Used in China and other countries for funeral tributes and memorials, in Japan it is the symbol of the royal family and used in the Festival of Happiness
The peony also originated in China, but unlike the chrysanthemum which is an autumnal flower, the peony is in bloom in the spring-early summer. The flower colours have similar meanings to the chrysanthemum, but pink portrays love and romance, while red are for respect, honour and passion, yellow are for wealth and good fortune, white for purity and humility.
