Gypsum, Satin Spar & Sphene

Gypsum is common and formed where salt water evaporates, such as ancient dried up oceans. Alabaster is popular for carving and satin spar makes beautiful cabochon. In deserts, where water evaporates from salty basins, gypsum forms around grains of sand into "desert roses".

Satin Spar

"Spar" is the word used by geologists to describe stones which break easily. The tiny fibrous crystal inclusions are the cause of the satin-esque sheen of the stone cut en cabochon.
