Spinel

Although occuring in a range of colours, spinel is most often associated as a red stone, coloured by chromium and iron.

Long thought to be a type of ruby and often confused with the stone. The Black Prince "ruby" in the Imperial Crown of the British Crown Jewels, has been proved to be a spinel.
