Tourmaline

Tourmaline is a multi mineral gemstone, known by the Egyptians as "rainbow rock"; they believed it collected the colours of the rainbow as it worked its way up through the earth. Tourmaline occurs in more colours than any other gemstone. John Ruskin, the 19th Century art critic stated that tourmaline was:

"more like a medieval doctor's prescription than a respectable mineral"

Sometimes containing a "cat's eye" when cut en cabochon, rubellite is the red/pink tourmaline. Tourmaline comes in all colours and many blends, achroite is colourless, dravite is brown, schorl is black, watermelon is pink and green. (Hover over the images below to see the tourmaline names)
