The portrait of Julia Domna shows the longevity of the passion for pearls, we chose Julia Domna Severus, partly because of her reputation and also because she was one of the famous Romans who actually visited Britain.

Syrian born Julia Domna was the second wife of Septimus Severus and one of the strong women of history, she was charming, witty, beautiful and intelligent, these traits meant when Septimus became emperor she was more than a vassal or token wife, even carrying the title 'Augusta' she visited Britain with Septimus in 208AD, when the family travelled to quell a revolt in the North of England, Severus died at York in 211AD, their sons, who had always been in conflict, were unable to carry out their father's wish to rule together and the eldest M. Aurelius Antoninous (aka Carracalla) arranged a fake reconcilliation so he was able to carry out the long-planned murder of his brother P. Septimus Geta. Whatever her thoughts on the murder, Julia continued to be a strong figure in the Carracalla administration, even ruling in his absence, when Carracalla was murdered Julia is thought to have starved herself to death, rather than being taken prisoner by his successor.
