The Vernon Pendant

Way back in the 1980s we received a book about Elizabethan England, amongst the many wonderful pictures was one of Elizabeth Vernon at her toilette, with pearls and jewels aplenty, including a very modern looking pearl and cabochon pendant, suspended from what looks like wire.

Elizabeth Vernon, maid of honour to Elizabeth I of England caused a scandal when she became pregnant by the Queen's favourite, the 3rd Earl of Southampton, once the pregnancy was discovered the pair married without the Queen's permission and were both banished from court.
